The Detmold Design Week is an annual event that aims to draw art and design enthusiasts into Detmold’s studios and vacant buildings and to offer new ideas in the field of design and art at a qualitative stage. The first Detmold Design Week in 2022 attracted more than 1500 visitors.

BLOCKPARTY is a collaborative video installation reflecting life and joy through the ages projected onto the facade of Hotel Nadler—a formerly bustling hotel, now lying abandoned in the heart of Detmold. The installation is accompanied by a musical composition to set an energetic tone. While the intangible nature of the projection conveys both the emotions and possibilities associated with change, the building grounds us in local histories.

Audio Reactive System: The visual elements of BLOCKPARTY consist of a set of audio reactive networks, assembled in TouchDesigner, a node-based programming environment. The musical composition was used as an input to generate movement and color changes in the bright blocks that play across the facade of an abandoned building.

Passage of Time: Recurring loops introduce blocks as they appear, move, break, and disappear just to start over. The revival and abandonment of one and the same place are condensed into the simple form of a rectangle. Color, shape, and sound adapt to the atmosphere of each phase and ensure excitement with a climax.
